Car Registration Process in UAE

Registering a car in the UAE is simple if you follow the right steps. Whether you live in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or other emirates, the process is similar but handled by different authorities.

This guide explains how to register a new or used car in the UAE.

Who Handles Car Registration?

In Dubai → Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)
In Abu Dhabi → Abu Dhabi Police
In other emirates → Ministry of Interior service centers

Documents Required

Before visiting the registration center, prepare:

✔ Emirates ID (original)
✔ UAE driving license
✔ Car insurance (valid UAE policy)
✔ Vehicle inspection certificate (if used car)
✔ Previous registration card (Mulkiya)
✔ Sale agreement (for used car transfer)

Step 1: Vehicle Inspection (For Used Cars)

If you are buying a used car, it must pass a vehicle inspection test.

Inspection checks brakes, tires, lights, emissions
Fee: Around AED 150–200
Valid for 30 days

New cars from dealerships usually don’t require inspection.

Step 2: Buy Car Insurance

Insurance is mandatory in the UAE.

You must choose:

Third-party insurance (minimum required)
Comprehensive insurance (recommended)

Cost depends on car type, value, and driver history.

Step 3: Visit Registration Center

Submit your documents at the registration counter.

You will pay:

Registration fee: Around AED 350–500
Plate fee (if new plates required)
Knowledge/innovation fees (Dubai specific)

Step 4: Receive Registration Card (Mulkiya)

Once payment is completed:

You receive the vehicle registration card (Mulkiya)
Car registration is valid for 12 months
Number plates are issued (if new vehicle)

Annual Renewal Process

Car registration must be renewed every year.

Renewal requires:

✔ Valid insurance
✔ Vehicle inspection (for cars older than 3 years)
✔ No unpaid traffic fines

There is usually a 30-day grace period after expiry.
